An Interview with Ryan and Alex Hutchinson, Mahiya Founders

Tell us about Mahiya.

Mahiya is a Bohemian inspired collection of leather accessories and clothing for the everyday woman who isn't afraid to stand out. We pride ourselves on creating original unique designs that are handmade with love and not mass produced.

What is the inspiration for your designs?

I was always a lover of 70s fashion after my mum was a hippy growing up and had a few cool pieces that she kept. I was a bit of a collector of vintage hand tooled leather bags, and saw that there really wasn't an updated version on the market. I just designs things that I personally love and hopes that everyone else will love them too.

Tell us about the person who loves Mahiya. What are a few words that describe their style and vibe?

Our customers are amazing and the backbone of our business. They are woman of all ages who like to wear unique designs, and are lovers of the bohemian vibe and of course leather.

Tell us about you. What was your inspiration to start Mahiya?

Mahiya is founded by myself (Alex Hutchinson) and my husband Ryan Hutchinson in 2013. It started as just an idea that grew into our first small range of wallets and handbags. We started small to see what the response would be like, and it grew organically from there with the addition of constant new designs and the addition of clothing, footwear, jewelry and accessories.

What is your proudest accomplishment to date?

I think it would be opening our new showroom and warehouse. It had been a long time coming, and to see all of my designs displayed beautifully in our own shop was a very proud moment.

Any fun facts we should know about you?

I am also a professional singer who has been blessed to work in stage shows overseas and around Australia before starting Mahiya. I still do corporate gigs on the side, and it is definitely another huge passion of mine.

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra you live by?

Live each day like it could be your last..you never know whats around the corner.

What's your favorite type of jewelry to pair with your vintage boho looks?

I am a big lover of oversized earrings, silver and turquoise jewels and chunky bracelets.

So, what's coming up next for Mahiya that you are most excited about?

We are about to welcome our first child into the world in October so it is going to be a whole new vibe juggling everything with a small baby but we have lots of new designs underway at the moment so we are looking forward to releasing these for the Summer season.
